Don’t ignore a letter or notice from the IRS

Don’t panic if you receive one of the millions of notices and letters the IRS sends to taxpayers every year. IRS letters or notices typically are about a specific issue on your federal tax return or tax account. Contact us if you have received a notice from the IRS and are unsure in any way of how to respond. Call me at (772)226-7511. We handle the time and trouble of responding to notices for many of our clients. Generally, the IRS sends a notice if:

  • You owe additional tax;
  • You are due a larger refund; or
  • The IRS is requesting payment or needs additional information about your return.

Many of these letters and notices can be dealt with simply, without having to “visit” an IRS office. For example, you may get a notice that states the IRS made a change or correction to your tax return. If you do receive this notice, review the information and compare it with your original return. If you agree with the changes – usually a forgotten W2, you usually don’t need to reply unless it gives you other instructions or you need to make a payment. If you are on an Installment Agreement from the IRS and receive a notice resulting in a balance due – Contact us immediately. This simple balance due can be enough to default your installment agreement and put you right back into collections.

If you don’t agree with the notice, it’s important to respond. Contact us and we can draft a response to explain why you disagree and we can include any information and documents you want the IRS to consider. Be sure to keep copies of any correspondence with your tax records.

You have the right to be represented before the Internal Revenue Service. If you owe back taxes to the IRS and are receiving any letters from the IRS, give us a call to go over what options you may have.
